The all-wheel-drive Pathfinder we tested was an underachiever, hitting only 22 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route-significantly lower than its EPA highway number of 26 mpg. Based on the EPA's metrics, both front- and all-wheel-drive versions of the Pathfinder sit near the top of the class-only the Mazda CX-9 with its turbocharged four-cylinder beats the Nissan in a few categories. Its real-world results in our hands, however, were disappointing. The Pathfinder's high EPA fuel-economy ratings promise good efficiency.

It's when you press the accelerator harder to merge or pass that you'll notice the engine droning, which can get annoying on extended drives. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard on all Pathfinders, and it's mostly unobtrusive and smooth in everyday driving. The 284-hp 3.5-liter engine is about average in this class, but clearly the Nissan doesn't use its ponies as well as jack rabbits such as the Chevy Traverse and the Honda Pilot. It's far from the quickest in its class, but it's not painfully slow, either. The Pathfinder's V-6 engine can best be described as adequate. Engine, Transmission, Performance, and Towing We'd also opt for both of the packages that the SV offers: the All-Weather package (heated front seats, steering wheel, and mirrors) and the Tech package (navigation, trailer-hitch receiver with towing harness, SiriusXM satellite radio, and NissanConnect telematics service). The SV strikes us as the sweet spot, given that it adds features such as keyless entry, push-button start with remote start, eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, automatic headlamps, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. Nissan packs plenty of value into the Pathfinder's lower-level models, with even the base S being fairly well equipped. Mocha Almond Pearl is added to the color palette. Rear parking sensors and two type-C USB ports are now standard across the range, SV models now come with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, and LED headlamps now come on SL and Platinum models.
Nissan has made a few changes to the 2019 Pathfinder's equipment. Overall, the aging Nissan's lack of outstanding qualities means that it mostly fades into the background of its highly competitive segment. Its strengths include a good value proposition and a flexible interior, while its standings are hurt by dated electronics and sloppy handling. Although its nameplate evokes its off-road heritage- the original Pathfinder was a tough, truck-based four-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicle- the current model is a pleasant enough family bus with seven seats and a comfortable ride but few rugged pretensions. If you were to blend all of today's three-row crossovers into a single, entirely average concoction, the 2019 Nissan Pathfinder would be the result.
